The Hunt Begins
Apollo stood on the top of a hill that eclipsed the ruined village bellow; it had happened again and again he had failed to discover the source of the disaster. When he looked over the village it was almost an exact clone of what he had seen all throughout the countryside; homes burned to the ground and still smoldering with dismembered bodies littering the street.
The smell of smoke and decay rose high on the on the wind causing Apollo to pull his jacket up over his nose to keep from gagging in disgust.
Wandering down into the ruins he started methodically going through them with very little hope of actually finding someone alive among the massacre, of all the villages he had been through there had only ever been one survivor. Still he had hoped for more in hopes of more information on whoever had caused this destruction.
As he dug through the ruins the memory of his encounter with the only survivor rang through fresh in his memory as if he was actually reliving it.
His memory of that first encounter just spurred him on, determined to find who was taking children and murdering their family. Apollo not finding anything physical walked to center of the village blocking out all his other senses, as he stood in the middle of the death and destruction. His father’s words echoed in the back of his mind, Close your eyes Apollo and feel the aura everything around you…you may not be able to see it with your eyes but we are not alone in this field can you tell me where the interloper is? His father had taught him to use his sense of aura’s to hunt to know when there was life hidden that might supply his next meal and that skill had saved his life many times since his disappearance. Now he was putting it to use trying to find survivors instead of meals but as his sense stretched far and wide to encompass the village he was met with a startling lack of life even minute forms from the ground.
With rage pouring through his body Apollo roared in anger as the buildings nearby groaned and fell over in their weakened state. “I will…find you...and…I will…stop you.” Apollo said through a growl promising this invisible army that he would make them pay for the suffering that they had caused.

Fires still burned with the smoke curling black up into the cloudless skies as if to plunge the world into the darkness of night once more; that had been what alerted him that something was wrong as Apollo tore off the path heading straight towards the smoke. When he arrived upon the scene the first time he could do nothing but vomit as the smell and sights overpowered him.
Bodies had been torn limb from limb and littered among the streets without restraint for who were killed men, women, children all were dead. The entire village had been wiped out in a single night. Apollo had started to gather up the bodies tossing them into the fires of the buildings in hopes of giving them some shred of dignity in the afterlife. When he came upon one man who was still intact with only a deep cut in one shoulder; his aura glowed casting a faint out outline around him as it flickered in and out. He was still alive, but just barely.
Placing a hand on the man’s good shoulder he tried to shake him awake, “Old man come now you need to wake up, please just wake up okay?” Apollo’s voice was strained from his episode earlier but the old man’s eyes slowly opened squinting in the bright light of the day. “Do you know of what happened around here to your village?”
The old man sat up and looked around as if realizing his own nightmares were, in fact, real. “Who are you?” he asked suspiciously as he clutched a good size rock that was lying near his hip.
“I am merely a passerby that saw the smoke from the road, and ran straight here in hope of being of assistance, but it looks like I was too late so I started to burn the bodies so they would have some semblance of a proper funeral. When I found you still intact well I checked to see if you were still alive, I lucked out.” Apollo smiled hoping he had given a good enough answer to convince the old man, without giving his name or revealing his identity as a Dragon Slayer. “Please sir can you tell me what happened or not?”
The old man nodded and relaxed his grip on the rock as his eyes went unfocused reliving the horror and death of his friends and family. “They came out of the darkness, like phantoms, nothing was there then the next heartbeat we had an entire army knocking at our gate. We tried our best in our surprised and startled state to fight them off, but no matter how many times we tried to cut them down they did not fall. Smoke curled up from their wounds, as black as midnight under the new moon and then forced their armor to close up and mend.
“They took people at random those they decided not to kill I guess mostly children, but when they had them the entire army went on a rampage intent on leaving no survivors. They started ripping their victims limb from limb, the screams of my comrades filled my ears as I fought for all I was worth. I managed to knock off one’s helmet but there was nothing but black smoke under it with two red points where its eyes should have been. But one of them caught me over the head with blunt side of an axe…and well the rest your guess is as good as mine.”
